Martin, Mich --- First of all, forget the rumors you might hear about Vince, KG, or Baron coming to West Michigan. Take it from this reporter, there will not be a significant number of changes on this years roster. GM and team owner Len Wahl has never been accused of being a patient man, but he certainly has been content to build this franchise from the ground up. After passing up opportunities to trade for All-Star players in previous years, they might as well see it through now.
Some fans may be anxious and want the team to make a big move and become a playoff contender immediately. But team management believes the rewards will come if the team waits and allows the young players to mature.
Word out of West Michigan is that a former All-Star may be gone soon and not necessarily in a trade. When asked about the rumor, Wahl refused to commit, stating only, "With the focus on younger players, there will be some tough decisions to make."
Guaranteed to make the roster are Samuel Dalembert, Darko Milicic, Al Jefferson, Chris Taft, Andres Nocioni, Stephen Jackson, Gerald Green, Martell Webster, Kirk Hinrich, and Nene. With those 10 spots locked up, only 3 spots remain.
Questions remain about players like Jarvis Hayes. While he has loads of potential, does the team keep another player at the 2-3 spot or do they focus on other areas? Keep in mind, the team still has the #7 pick overall in this years draft. The team was committed to trading the #7 overall pick at one time. However, the lack of legitimate interest in the pick from other teams has prompted management to seriously consider keeping the pick.
Recently we have heard a rumor that there may be a player at 7 that the team has been following for more than a year. If their player falls to them, look for the team to be elated that they held on to it.
Focus in this off season is really two-fold, first decide which players are going to fill the remaining 3 roster spots and secure the backup PG position behind Hinrich.
